In 2007, the WC Department of Business Management introduced a program where students get hands-on experience in investing. The Alex. Brown Student Managed Investment Fund gives students the opportunity to manage a half-million dollar investment fund, with more educational opportunities like trips to the New York Stock Exchange and guest speakers from the world of finance.
Funding for The Alex. Brown Fund is provided by a $500,000 gift from Jim and Midge Price, matched by $500,000 from the Hodson Trust. Mr. Price is a former partner and managing director of Alex. Brown and a Trustee Emeritus of Washington College. “When I finished college, I had no real-world knowledge of the investment world,” says Mr. Price. “It was learning on the job. When I joined Alex. Brown & Sons, I had great mentors but, as I look back, I always wished I had started with more knowledge of investments.” The Fund gives this opportunity to students at Washington College.
