Alex. Brown Student-Managed Investment Fund
What would you do with a half million dollars?
As the students in the Alex. Brown Student Investment Program know, the right answer is: "Invest."
W. James Price IV, a former partner and managing director of Alex. Brown & Sons and a member of the College's Board of Visitors and Governors, funded the program to give Washington College's business students an edge in launching careers in finance.
"When I finished college, I had no real-world knowledge of the investment world," Price said. "When I started at Alex. Brown & Sons, I had great mentors but, as I look back, I always wished I had started with more knowledge of investments."
As program director Scott Pearson says, "You learn a lot more when there's something riding on it."
Students enrolled in the Portfolio Management Practicum learn about different economic sectors, research several companies in that industry, and then decide as a group how to manage their holdings.
In its first six months, the portfolio earned about $30,000. View the live report of the holdings.
